Indiana police get millions to help combat reckless driving

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Deputies with a local sheriff's office are set to receive a substantial boost in pay.

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom says the county council approved his request for increased pay for his deputies.

Deputies will receive an extra $10,000 per year. This puts the starting salary at the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office at $47,500.

Cottom says the county does receive quality officers, but they typically move on to bigger departments. One of the hopes of the pay increase is keeping officers around longer.

Cottom requested a 10 percent raise for civilian staff, including dispatchers and jailers. The council approved a five percent raise.
