new for you tonight at 6... storm team 10's chris piper explains the types of weather you need to be prepared for. < as our temperatures get warmer, we'll start to see more severe weather. from flooding, to tornadoes and thunderstorms, the spring and summer seasons bring it all. "indiana receives most of its severe weather during the months of april, may, and june. so it's during those months we need to make sure that we are prepared and ready for severe weather. jason puma is a meteorologist, with the national weather service in indianapolis. he says over the next few months, we can expect a wide variety of different kinds of weather. "right now, i think we're gonna have more tornadoes than we had last year, and i'm only saying that because last year in indiana we only had twelve tornadoes. in central indiana, we only had three tornadoes." puma says each year, the average in indiana is 20 to 24 tornadoes. but flooding can also be a concern. "flooding, believe it or not is our number one weather killer in the united states. it kills more people than tornadoes, it kills more people than hurricanes, kills more people than lightning." he says the reason for this is simple. people either think they can drive through flood waters, or they just simply aren't prepared. "so as we head into severe weather preparedness week, we want to make sure that you have a plan in place at your home, your business and your schools so that everyone you know knows what to do when severe weather strikes your area. storm team 10 will have continuing coverage over the next few days. we'll cover things the state is doing to get prepared... and some of the ways you can take action right now. back to you. >
