one wabash valley school is growing a program to get students interest in science... technology... engineering... and math careers. they put those students to the test today with a friendly competition. news 10's garrett brown traveled to brazil today and has more on how students are building for a brighter tomorrow. it's new for you at six. <many of us played with legos when we were younger. but the kids at this competition took a similar concept to a whole new level. van buren elementary school in brazil was the host of one major area competition this weekend. but this wasn't your normal school contest. "i thought it was cool so i decided i wanted to do it. you have to program it and that was the hard part because we had to program it twice because the controls were different." that's right... these students took part in building, assembling and driving robots. twenty one teams from eleven schools took part in a vex robotics competition. the coach for van buren says its amazing to educate these kids in such a unique area. "being a special ed teacher i didn't get to teach it a lot so it actually give me that opportunity to share the love of science with these kids. just to see them learn and grow and have fun with science excites me." van burens' team has gradually grown over the past three year. teachers say they're excited to see more girls interested in the program. "we ended up splitting into two teams. a boys and a girls team and they were just really excited to compete against each other. so i really like to see these other goes go into that area sooner." even though it was a contest.. these kids just enjoyed the fun of the project. including meeting so many others interested in this stem driven field. "it makes me happy cause other kids want to do it. like they actually likie this stuff." the winners of this event will take part in the state competition in indianapolis. that will take place march 9th. back to you.> more students more more students tested
