VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - The Vigo County prosecutor has cleared a Vigo County deputy in a shooting earlier this year.
The shooting happened in April in West Terre Haute.
During a Friday press conference, Prosecutor Terry Modesitt called the incident an ambush on law enforcement officers.
Modesitt says Deputy Elias Donker's actions were legally justifiable under the self-defense law.
Donker shot and killed Errol Bolin.
Police say Bolin was firing at officers from a wooded area.
"I commend the bravery of the officers that moved toward the shooter while he was firing in order to protect their fellow officers and the public," Modesitt said.
Police were looking for Bolin leading up to the shooting. That is after a phone call from someone worried about his well-being.
Shortly after, shots were exchanged. Police found Bolin was dead.
The prosecutor's office released pictures from the scene on Friday morning.
They show bullet holes in law enforcement vehicles.
Indiana State Police found a handgun, two shotguns, and multiple knives in the woods.
There were at least 21 casings from shots fired by Bolin.
