INDIANA (WTHI) - Unemployment overpay happens when someone receives more unemployment than they deserve.
This is an issue that grew when more people filed unemployment because of the pandemic.
"You can't just work a little harder and do ten times the work, and that's what the unemployment office was faced with. So the predisposition was to pay it and figure it out later," says Indiana State University Economics Professor, Robert Guell.
Many in the Wabash Valley have been receiving letters from the Department of Workforce Development that say they owe thousands.
Many commented on the News 10 Facebook page and said they also received bills, some of which were all the way up to $11,000.
