The reason why sunsets are a red tint

If you've ever wondered why sunsets never stray from the red hues, it's actually a pretty simple reason.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - One of the old questions is why is the sky blue?

The same can be asked about sunsets, why are they always a hue of red or orange?

The sun gives off different color wavelengths.

There are three primary colors it gives off, red, yellow, and blue.

As those colors come in, they can be scattered by dust, rain, or air particles.

That can be a big factor when it comes to what the sunset looks like.

As the sun sets, it is much farther from the earth than it is at noon.

Because of this, the light has to travel much farther to reach us here at the surface.

This is when those colored wavelengths come into play.

Blue is the shortest wavelength, and when it gets scattered, it's the first one to disappear.

This makes it harder to make it's way to our eyes.

Yellow is next, followed by red, which is the longest.

Because of this, as the sun sets, the remaining colors we see are more of an orange or a red tint.
