VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Vigo County has one of the worst infant mortality rates in Indiana. That’s according to the state’s Health Department. For every 1,000 babies born, more than seven die before the age of one. This is higher than the state average.

Union Hospital in Terre Haute is committed to rewriting these statistics.

Experts recommend an easy acronym to remember what to do as you put a baby to sleep: ABC’s.
• A – A baby should always sleep alone.
• B – A baby should always sleep on their back.
• C – A baby should always be in a crib.

News 10 reported last year that the mother-baby unit received nearly $1 million in a state PIN grant. They used that money to decrease infant mortality in the area.

The leading cause of infant death under three months is suffocation during sleep, according to Union Hospital. So they focused their efforts on safe sleep practices.

Now, Union Hospital in Terre Haute is being recognized for their care.

“We were just recognized by Cribs for Kids as a Gold Champion as a safe sleep hospital, which is the highest level that you can get, the gold champion,” said Jennifer Walker, Maternal Child Services Educator at Union Hospital. “So they recognize hospitals that go above and beyond.”

“I would put a big emphasis probably that room sharing is okay, they actually encourage to keep your baby in your room at night. But they should be in a crib. Room sharing is okay but bed sharing is not,” said Walker.
