TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Police have released new information about a Christmas Day shooting on Terre Haute's east side, saying a person was driving around stealing mail leading up to the shooting.
Around 9:30 Wednesday morning, officers were called to Blackfriars Court in the Wyndham neighborhood along State Road 46 after a report of shots being fired.
The Terre Haute Police Department says a person was driving around stealing mail when he was confronted by one of the victims of the mailbox thefts. According to police, the mail theft suspect then hit the victim with his car. At that time, the victim fired several shots at the suspect, striking him several times in the torso.
Police say the victim was injured and is being treated for injuries.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is still being treated. The Terre Haute Police Department says the suspect will ultimately be charged with aggravated battery.
News 10 talked to a neighbor who has lived in the subdivision for more than 20 years.
He told us he was opening presents with his family around 9 a.m. when sirens filled the neighborhood.
"Generally a pretty quiet neighborhood. We don't generally have any type of problems out here, so it was a little concerning once you started seeing the reports coming through," Rick Bagnoche said.
Police have not released the name of the suspect. News 10 expects to learn the name of the suspect when he is released from the hospital.
