Schools face concerns after active shooter situation

Vigo County schools respond to a question many of you have asked us: why did schools in the area stay open with an active shooter in the area?

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A question many of you have asked is why did schools in the area stay open with an active shooter in the area?

Brianna Frank has three children, including a Kindergarten at Meadows Elementary. Her family lives on 2nd Avenue.

Their home is right behind where the shooter started on 1st Avenue.

Frank believes that the suspect walked through her yard to get to the second location on 4th Avenue.

She says this is concerning, especially because her kids could've been waiting for school during that time.

“If I can't even walk through my front door because of stray bullets or the shooter or police, but yet you want me to send me daughter out the front door and walk to the bus, that may or may not even be coming, it just seems a little ridiculous to me,” said Frank.

News 10 reached out to Vigo County Superintendent Dr. Danny Tanoos with your concerns. He says bus drivers were already picking up students when police notified them of the on-going standoff. Tanoos says this was too late to contact all parents.

He says school leaders and police made sure students were picked up by the bus. Students who were on lockdown were excused from school.
