TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The time is always right to do what is right. It was this year's theme of the Martin Luther King Junior Youth Summit.

Although school wasn't in session Monday, students attended the summit on their day off.

Community leaders spoke to students about leadership, diversity, and how to prepare for their future.

"Wonderful speakers who come who have a passion for service and caring for oppressed and under-represented groups and wanting to place that vision into their minds," said Mary Howard-Hamilton, key note speaker at the event.

Several students came to participate and re-visit the history of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior.

Alyssa Conrad is a sophomore at South Vigo High School.

She says the things she learned today will change the way she thinks in the future.

"Learning that only three percent of people would stand up for what they believe in and what is right, instead of going with the flow and doing what people tell them to," said Conrad.

Indiana State University students also attended the event, giving younger students the opportunity to interact with them.

"We do a lot of outreach in the community, so I know a lot of kids come out here, so we wanted to have a helping hand with that," said Ell Arnold, ISU student.

Conrad says she has taken away more knowledge than she had expected.

"You can learn a lot from it. Not just about other people, but about yourself," said Conrad.

She encourages more students to attend next year.

"The next time this place holds one of these, a lot more people should come," said Conrad.

This was the twelfth year for the event.

Organizers say each year, they hope for an even bigger turn out.
