LAWRENCEVILLE, IL. (WTHI) - When going through a divorce, it can be difficult for those involved. It can be even harder on a child.

Often times, when a judge rules in a child custody case, one parent is given the short end of the stick.

"The cards are stacked against one parent, and it's so much harder for them to prove that they are deserving of 50/50," said Chad Loudermilk, president, and co-founder of ILFFE.

That's why Illinois Fathers for Equality was created.

It's a group that is working on getting a bill passed and put into law for presumptive 50/50 shared custody.

They have many supporters, including over 2600 followers on Facebook.

"It's not just dads or moms. We have step-parents, we have grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles," said Loudermilk.

There are 26 other states across America who are working to have a bill just like this one.

Now, the group is currently in the process of trying to get the bill signed by the Illinois governor.

Their main goal is to help kids and do what is in their best interest.

Research says when kids have a 50/50 parental agreement, there is a drop in suicide rates, teen pregnancy, and behavioral issues among these children.

"It's in the best interest of kids to spend equal time with both parents if both parents are fit parents," said Loudermilk.

For now, the group is hoping the bill will be passed.

The just want children to have the best life spent with both parents.
