CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - One person is dead and two others are injured after a fire in the Meridian Towers located in Brazil.
Meridian Towers is located at 120 W. National Avenue and is a low-income housing complex. Officials say the building holds about 65 people.
The fire was reported around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say the fire started on the 4th floor of the building with most of the damage being contained to one room.
At this time, officials are not releasing the name of the deceased or what caused the fire.
Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett told News 10 residents of Meridian Towers were evacuated and taken to nearby Cooper Towers, family members and local shelters in the Clay County area.
The fire remains under investigation.
News 10 spoke with several residents, one of them told us she was living on the 4th floor at the time of the fire. She said the hallway was covered in heavy black smoke. Her natural instinct was just to get out and get to safety.
After being asked what was going through her mind as events unfolded, Jennifer Erwin said, "What in the world is going on in our apartment building? The lady that I was helping said 'She's in flames! She's in flames!' talking about the resident."
