TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Citizens for Better Government in Vigo County say they've waited more than a year for a forum that's now set for March 20th. Just ask Michael Gordon and Mike Esau, who were kind enough to meet with News 10 Monday at the Vigo County Public Library. They told us they hope the forum includes what the public expects from a jail, what they feel the county can afford, and what alternatives there are to building a new jail.
"In the past, we've been told there aren't any," Gordon told us. "We think there are, and this is a good chance to speak for people to speak up."
Dr. Kenneth Ray of RJS Justice Services says the assessment of the jail facility itself is complete. The study, though, is far from over. In fact, he says the public's input will shape where the study goes from here.
"My experience doing this is the public kind of knows what they want and what they don't want," Dr. Ray said.
Each person that comes to the forum will be asked to fill out a survey asking about one's expectations of the jail. Dr. Ray calls himself a "data junkie" and says the more people at this forum, the better.
"Our opinion is going to be based on the data, facts, and expected outcomes," Dr. Ray said.
As Gordon put it, "This is a real opportunity, a ground-floor opportunity with a new start from the old plans."
The forum is Tuesday, March 20th at 6 p.m. taking place in the auditorium of Terre Haute North Vigo High School.
