TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - According to the CDC, thousands of people die every year due to drowning.

It remains the 5th leading cause of unintentional deaths in the U.S.

One Terre Haute group is working to fight statistics like this.

News 10 stopped by the Vigo County Aquatics Center.

That's where we found the Terre Haute Torpedoes Master Club members teaching adults how to swim for free.

They say it's all about making people feel safe in the water.

"10 people in the United States drown every day and the majority of those are adults so if we can lessen that that will be great," instructor Jerri Lynn Bayless.

April is Adults Learn to Swim month.
