TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI)- An infestation of bed bugs in on the rise. Terre Haute Code Enforcement officers say this has been a problem over the last three to four years.

Not only are they gross, but they can be a pain to get rid of. Officers say there are far too many homes being infested. And, the city is trying to decrease the issue.

Jamie Hughes has been a code enforcement officer for more than 11 years.

“We have had some complaints on bed bugs,” Hughes said.

She says she receives at least two complaints each day about bed bugs.

“All of a sudden we started having issues with them,” Hughes said.

Rebecca Cherepkai called code enforcement to pick up her two mattresses.

“Whenever I’d fall asleep, they’d come right out at me,” Cherepkai said.

Cherepkai is no stranger to this rising problem. She has been dealing with bed bugs for nearly two years.

“I make my son leave his coat and backpack right outside the door," she said.

Hughes says there are specific spots bed bugs hide.

“They like to live in between the two mattresses,” Hughes said. “Anywhere that is warm or in the cushions of your couch.”

Hughes says if you think you might have bed bugs, call pest control.

The city will also provide you with two bags to wrap your infested furniture in. You can call 311 Citizen Contact Center to pick them up. Your infested furniture will soon be picked up and disposed at a landfill.

Here are some more tips to prevent bed bug infestation in your home:

- Check your furniture, beds, and couches for any signs of beg bugs infestation
- Use a protective cover to go over your mattress and box spring to eliminate hiding spots
- Reduce clutter in your home, this will eliminate more hiding places for bed bugs
- Vacuum often
- Be careful when using different laundry facilities
