(TERRE HAUTE, Ind.) - Many of us will catch a cold at some point this season. But one virus can have a dangerous impact on kids if it goes untreated.

This sickness is called respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. According to health care professionals, it's popping up in doctors' offices everywhere.

According to research with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, RSV cases have doubled in past two weeks.

This sickness is nothing new, but health care professionals at Union Hospital say they take it very seriously because it can cause long term problems for newborns and toddlers.

They say they’ve only admitted one child in their hospital for RSV this season.

Experts say first the virus appears as a common cold with kids, including a runny nose and cough. But when symptoms don't away after four to five days, they say it can turn into a long-term problem, such as lung disease.

“If you do have a child who gets admitted with RSV, it is something we take very seriously even though it's a common virus we see,” said Jaimee Goodman, Director of Maternal Child Services at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. “You could expect to see a child in isolation room, we would provide gowns and masks for that.”

Union Hospital says during RSV season, they have restriction on visitors, especially in the newborn intensive care unit.

Goodman says RSV season is October – March.
