WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Five months.
That's how long the Cook Road Bridge in West Terre Haute has been closed to traffic.
Vigo County leaders are calling this bridge an “emergency bridge” that needs to be repaired as soon as possible. That's because the bridge is necessary for daily traffic.
News 10 went to rural Vigo County to see how people in the area are handling the closure that’s become quite the inconvenience.
West Terre Haute resident James Williams says, "You have to allow a little more time because you have to go out to the Robinson Road almost to West Terre Haute before you can get on Darwin Road and go to the interstate."
Williams basically lives on a dead-end road now. That's because the Cook Road Bridge washed out due to major flooding and had to be closed.
Williams recalls, "It used to be a span bridge all the way across then they put these culverts in there and they catch the trees and you see a pile where they've dug them out up on the bank."
When devastating floods took place in May of 2017, people who used the bridge every day were hoping it would only be closed a few weeks. But unfortunately, it's now turned to months.
Another West Terre Haute resident, Bill Wardle says, "I’ve lived here for about 8 years and that bridge out is a very unhandy thing for me. I can't go to the south end of Terre Haute and I have to go around the world."
But Wardle isn't just an inconvenienced resident, he's also an inconvenienced business owner.
Wardle shares, "I have Llewellin dogs that I sell on occasion and people come to look at them and the GPS tries to direct them to where the bridge is out."
As you can imagine, Wardle is hopeful a fix will come sooner rather than later.
He says, "It has went out before. Not this bad. But it's been washed out before and usually a couple weeks at most it's going. But now it's been months."
And, the days will continue to add up until repairs can be made. However, now that the bridge has been declared an emergency, the next step for the county is to look for bids to get the structure fixed.
