VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A new member of the Vigo County Council is selected. Vicki Weger will represent taxpayers in the third district.
She's taking the place of former Councilwoman Kathy Chalos Miller.
The stakes are high for each council seat. That's because the County Council is responsible for creating a plan on how to pay for the jail crisis.
Whether that's building a new jail or expanding on what we have now.
Members of the Democratic Caucus selected Weger to fill the open seat. Weger was one of four candidates listed on Monday’s ballot.
News 10 hit the streets to find out what some residents want out of the new seat and council in general. For Tiffany Sinclair, she's lived in Vigo County for 33 years.
She considers herself middle class. She says she's attended some of the council meetings to echo her concerns on the proposed income tax to pay for a new jail.
“We need somebody in there that's going to speak for us and not step on us. That's what this new tax is going to do. It's going to step on us. It's basically going to make us a cockroach under their foot,” said Sinclair. “And we need somebody that's not going to do that to us.”
Weger explains she has an advantage to this new position because of a lack of bias.
“I'm not dependent on the salary, I don't worry about getting reelected,” said Wegner. “I'll make a decision not worried that it might defeat me at the polls, and I think that's a big advantage."
Weger will serve on the county council until the term expires on December 31, 2018.
