ROBINSON, Ill. (WTHI) - The Fork in the Road Crew traveled to Robinson, Ill. as the last stop in search for the best fried chicken in the Wabash Valley
Betty Griffith has owned Gabriel's Family Dining for nine years.
She and her son, who the restaurant is named after, work together here serving loyal customers their famous fried chicken. And they serve a lot of it.
"On a slower week about 300 to 350 pounds, and our busier times 4,400," Griffith said. "Well I make my own breading, I've tried store bought ones and I never have been satisfied with them there was either to much spice and I don't use any salt in it.....salt is a toughener for meat so i never salt it. It just comes in fresh and we hand bread it and fry it.....about as fast as I can fry it they eat it."
"I cook it at about 330 degrees because it seems to hold the moister so much better, evidently they liked it because i have sure cooked a lot," she explained.
If you ask around Gabriel's Family Dining you will find a lot of folks that agree.
"the way she fry's it and it doesn't have as much breading as some places, more like the way my mother fixed it.......would you say that this is the best you have ever had? Well it can't beat my mothers....laughter but it's very good....yes it is very close," a Gabriel's regular, Marilyn Albert, said. "It's really good food....try it."
After the first bite it was clear why Gabriel's was nominated, and Griffith considers those nominations a huge compliment for her little Robinson diner.
"It's hard work but people enjoy it and I'd rather give them what they enjoy. I am just thankful that they nominated me because that's a blessing," she said.
