DES MOINES, Iowa - Indiana State junior guard Dawon Cummings scored a career-high 16 points but the Sycamores had two looks from 3-point range miss in the final 10 seconds and Drake earned a 74-71 victory over the Sycamores in front of 4,439 fans inside the Knapp Center.
The Sycamores fell to 14-8, 7-4 MVC while Drake improved to 11-11, 5-6 MVC.
Cummings hit 6-of-10 shots from the field in scoring the 16 poitns to go with four rebounds and two steals.
Four Sycamores reached double figures scoring as Mahurin and Odum each posted 14 and Gant had 11.
Indiana State hit 27-of-57 shots from the field (47.4 percent), but Drake was able to convert 28-of-57 (49.1 percent).
ISU forced 14 Drake turnovers and scored 20 points off them.
Mahurin tied the contest at 65 with 1:35 remaining off a post feed from Justin Gant. After Drake took the lead, Odum scored in the paint with 43 seconds left to tie the game at 67. After the Sycamores got a defensive stop, Odum had a jumper from 20 feet at the buzzer which missed to send the game into overtime.
Drake scored the first five points of the overtime, but Mahurin answered with a lay-up off the feed from Odum to cut the Bulldog advantage own to 72-69. Arop hit a tough jumper in the paint after a defensive stop to further cut the lead down to 72-71 with just over two minutes left in extra time.
Each team traded defensive stops before Drake controlled possessions with under a minute left. The Sycamores got yet another defensive stop and called a timeout with 29.7 seconds left. Gant got a clean look at the 3-pointer with eight seconds left but it missed. With 6.1 seconds on the clock, Chris Hines hit a pair of free throws and Cummings missed a trey at the buzzer to give Drake the 74-71 victory.
RJ Mahurin opened the scoring for Indiana State off a feed from Manny Arop and scored seven of the game's first nine points to race out to a 7-2 advantage on a lay-up by Devonte Brown after he recorded the steal. After the first media timeout, Dawon Cummings continued his recent string of success with a 3-pointer as the clock ticked under 15 minutes left in the first half for a 10-5 cushion.
Brown scored five of the Sycamores' first 13 points as he hit a 3-pointer at the 11:59 mark of the opening stanza to give ISU a 13-9 lead. After Drake countered with its own 3-pointer, the Sycamores embarked on a 7-0 run and took a 20-12 lead with 7:59 to go on a driving lay-up from Odum. The Indiana State defense stood tall in the early going as Drake hit just five of their first 16 shots (31.3 percent) and were held scoreless for nearly five minutes until Jordan Clarke converted a lay-up with seven minutes left to cut the Sycamore lead down to 20-14.
After Drake climbed back into the game by scoring eight of 10 points, ISU stretched its lead back out to 26-20 with 4:11 left before the break on free throws from Jake Odum and RJ Mahurin. Cummings also scored on a nice inside move from the paint at the 3:31 mark to give the Sycamores a 28-22 lead.
Dawon Cummings got a steal and a lay-up to give the Sycamores a 34-26 advantage, but Drake scored the final six points of the opening stanza including a desperation half court shot at the buzzer by Gary Ricks as Indiana State held a 34-32 lead at the break.
Cummings led the Sycamores with 10 points in the first half. The Sycamore defensive forced nine Drake turnovers before the break which led to 15 points.
Drake got off to a hot start in the second half as Ben Simons led a quick charge out of the gate and the Bulldogs connected on four of their first five attemtps from 3-point range to take a 44-38 lead at the first media timeout.
After Drake ran the lead out to eight points, Cummings continued his strong scoring performance and went over his career high with 13 points to cut the Drake lead down to 46-41. Mahruin then scored on a second chance opportunity as the clock ticked below 14 minutes remaining to get the Sycamores within 48-43. Arop then continued the Sycamore push forward with a lay-up to get the Sycamores withing 48-45.
Drake ran its lead back out to 54-46 but Devonte Brown scored a driving lay-up and Cummings grabbed a steal and converted a conventional 3-point play at the 9:41 mark to get the Sycamores withing 54-51.
The Sycamores kept grinding away at Drake and scored four points in a row to knot the contest at 57 with just over seven minutes remaining on a driving lay-up by Brown, which followed one from Odum. After empty possessions for both teams, Odum was fouled with 5:57 remaining and hit both free throws to push the Sycamores ahead 59-57.
After Drake scored four in a row and the Bulldogs regained the lead, Arop pushed the Sycamores ahead with his first 3-pointer of the game as the clock ticked under four minutes remaining for a 62-61 advantage.
Ben Simons scored 21 points to lead Drake.
Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they return home to face off against nationally-ranked Creighton. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET).
