TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Newport Chemical Depot announced by mid-October, 150 peoplewill be laid off.
In the 1960's the Newport Chemical Depot was home to making thetoxic nerve agent VX. These day, employees at the plant work toneutralize the chemical.
Most of the workers knew the day would come when their job wouldbe done.
"This moment for me means that we are finishing our mission. Andanytime a military officer can finish their mission is a proudmoment... We focused on getting the job done, getting the job donewell and taking care of people at the same time," Lt. ColonelWilliam Hibner of the Newport Chemical Depot said.
Now, it's time for the remaining employees to move on.
"The loss of jobs is a testament to the successful work theemployees have done here," Anthony Reed of the Newport ChemicalDepot said.
The Newport Chemical Depot plans on closing for good by nextsummer.
