TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Deputy Chris Mundy is the newest member of the Otter Creek Middle School staff.
He's a former Terre Haute Police officer,
"I just think it's a wonderful thing. I think school safety... it's just number one in mind."
He's turned his focus to protecting children. He's been deputized by Vigo County to be a school patrol officer. It wasn't an easy process to get him there.
Vigo County Council recently gave the green light to have armed officers in all Vigo County Schools. The total cost was about $600 thousand dollars.
"It provides just a sense of safety and security to parents. When you drop them off everyday it just gives them a feeling of security knowing that that officer's there, seeing that friendly face," Otter Creek Middle School principal, Tammy Rowshandel said.
Mundy will be stationed right at the front door. He'll also patrol halls, helping to keep the peace.
Dozens of others just like him will be stationed in Vigo County Schools
It's a bold move by the district and a step that Danny Tanoos said they needed to make sooner rather than later.
"I don't think it's good to wait for Indianapolis to make those decisions for you, because a lot of red tape gets in the way and a lot of politics gets in the way and when that happens things get delayed and I don't think you can delay safety and security of students and staff and say I wished I had of," Tanoos said.
Indiana lawmakers are debating a bill that would require schools to have an armed staff member in every building.
It's one reason the state has their eyes on Vigo County.
"According to a news release that was mentioned to me today the governor is now saying what's happening in Vigo County should be happening everywhere," Tanoos said.
Meanwhile, so far, things are going smoothly at Otter Creek. Officer Mundy's in place.
He hopes he'll never have to use the ultimate force to protect, but several parents teachers and officials glad to know he's there.
Vigo County Schools said they look to continue the system for the foreseeable future. They also said they'll keep an eye on what comes out of the statehouse.
