VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A day after the Vigo County School Corporation pushes forward a central pool proposal; the Vigo County Council unveiled their plans for an aquatic center.
"Right now Vigo County is looking at building an indoor and outdoor aquatics center," county council member Kathy Miller said Tuesday.
In Tuesday’s council meeting, a computer presentation brought the plan to life.
"The indoor facility would be a 65 meter pool that would be set at a level where collegiate level and national level competitions could be held in our area,” Miller explained.
The council’s rendering is based off of a facility in Shenandoah, Texas that already holds those types of events. After talking to officials in Texas, the council believes the impact of competitions at state, collegiate and national levels could bring in more than a million dollars a year.
Beyond economics, the council feels the 2nd part of the aquatic center would help you.
"Also the outdoor water park component would provide recreation and family wellness for our community," said Miller.
The council’s basic plan would include a water park based on the one the city of Plainfield has already.
But, if this pool proposal sounds like déjà vu, its not. You are reading about the second aquatic center proposal in two days.
Monday the Vigo County School Corporation revealed its plan to replace its three high school pools with a central community pool.
However, these two organizations will not be working together.
"The county did share the same presentation you saw tonight with the school corporation and they have decided to move along in the process," Miller explained.
Where once there were no pools, there now may be two.
The Vigo County Council will now look into a feasibility study to see if the aquatic center is a project the county should take forward.
