TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - News 10 tagged along Monday afternoon as a technician from the Vigo County Health Department checked a trap used to capture mosquitoes to be tested for the deadly West Nile virus.
"There's maybe one in there," said David Higgins, who's with the department's vector control division.
Higgins is one of roughly four specialists who work the entire county for the duration of mosquito season.
Higgins and Sydney Elliott, the department's health educator, said by Friday they like to have gathered at least 10 mosquitoes in the roughly 15 traps county-wide; that allows 150 dead insects to be shipped to Indianapolis for West Nile testing at the State department of health.
Last week, the Vigo County health department confirmed four cases of West Nile in mosquitoes, not human beings: one in the northern end of the county; one in the east; and two in the southern end; there are, so far, no cases in the western end of Vigo County.
As for mosquito spraying, Elliott said that practice is done at night, Monday through Friday, until the first frost comes.
The only confirmed human case of West Nile in the state was reported last week in Ripley County, Ind. near Cincinnati.
Two people are in the Vigo County jail facing charges of burglary with deadly weapons, residential entry, and possession of various drugs and paraphernalia.
