KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Construction is underway in Knox County on a project aimed to improve healthcare.
The 200,000 square foot structure will welcome 120-patient beds, but serve a number of other functions, including an OB/GYN wing and a cardiac unit. It's part of a bigger project to renovate much of Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.
Rob McLin, president of the hospital said Tuesday he's excited about the opportunities the new building will bring. "We're calling it the Beacon Project," said McLin, "Beacon stands for building excellence around communities, opportunities and needs", said McLin.
Hunt Construction, based out Indianapolis was awarded the contract to work on Good Samaritan Hospital. The construction group was also a key element in the building of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
On Tuesday, Hunt construction crews worked on two elevator towers that will service the new building. It's slated to be five stories for patients with a sixth story for other uses. "Everything will be done by the second half of 2016," said McLin.
The new building carries around a $109M price tag, but money McLin says is worth it, "When we're done with this facility, you're going to have a world class plant that will match the people and that will match the doctors."
Following the completion of this phase of work, crews will work to renovate some of Good Samaritan's older buildings.
