GREENE COUNTY (WTHI) - Update: Indiana State Police confirm two Greene County Sheriff's deputies Wednesday were shot following a domestic disturbance in southern Greene County.
The deputies Wednesday were called to a home near the town of Owensburg, Indiana after learning of a domestic dispute between two parties. Officers later identified one of those parties as Michael Lane Jr., 25, of Owensburg. The second party involved fled the scene.
When officers arrived at the home on State Road 45, Lane opened fire, said police. Lane's gunfire hit Deputy Jim O'Malley and Deputy Brad Deckard who responded to domestic disturbance call, said police.
According to a press release, backup officers returned gunfire while tending to the deputies who had been shot. Backup officers removed the two injured deputies from the scene safely, said police.
Responding officers established a perimeter at the scene and later entered the residence. That's where they found Michael Lane dead. At this point, officers say, it's not clear whether Lane died as a result of police gunfire or a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
"The nature of the original domestic disturbance is not known at this time nor are the specifics regarding the shots that were fired. The investigation is going", said police.
Both deputy Deckard and O'Malley were transported to Indiana University Health in Bloomington. News 10 confirmed Deputy Brad Deckard Wednesday night had been released from the hospital. Deputy Jim O'Malley was still in the care of medical officials.
Indiana State Police say Lane was pronounced dead at the scene.
