INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The IU Health system told employees on Thursday that it was cutting hundreds of jobs.
IU Health has hospitals throughout Indiana, with Methodist Hospital located in downtown Indianapolis.
The hospital group will cut about 800 jobs.
"This was a very tough decision. You don't do things like with our a lot of consideration," said Jim Terwilliger, president of IU Health's Methodist and University hospitals. "We are trying to position the system to be successful in a radically changing industry."
According to the letter sent to employees, IU Health offered early retirement to employees who were 62 years old but won't turn 65 by Dec. 31. The hospital group said it hoped the early retirement option would reduce the number of necessary cuts.
The cuts appear to affect IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, IU Health North Hospital, IU Health Saxony Hospital, IU Health Tipton Hospital, the academic health center and System Services.
