TERRE HAUTE, Ind.(WTHI) - Cell phone lines in Boston Monday were jam-packed as runners, family members and friends fought over what limited cell service was available.
Some consumer advocates suggest, in emergencies like that, texting is the better way to communicate.
"Text first, talk second," said Mary Lou Pagano, with the Georgia based non-profit Safe America. "We want every American citizen to be able to reach their family in an emergency."
Pagano spoke earlier this week with WSB Television in Atlanta.
It's a concept local cell carriers agree with.
"We encourage people to text message because it's a lot easier to go through. It's quicker, quick way to communicate. Uhm, it's going to go through, you're going to have more (of a) chance to get a hold of people versus trying to call when the pipe line's full," David Scott shared with News 10. Scott manages the Terre Haute Verizon store in front of Honey Creek Mall.
Plus, Scott added, texting frees up the phone lines for the real emergencies and the real emergency responders.
"You want to leave the lines open for emergency responders and crews so they can call and, you know, get a hold of people as well," said David Scott.
Consider this: Safe America, according to its research, said the same cell space required for a one-minute cell phone call is the same amount of space 800 short text messages can fit into.
Details are few at this hour, but News 10 is on the scene of a single vehicle crash on State Road 59, just south of Mansfield.
Two people are in the Vigo County jail facing charges of burglary with deadly weapons, residential entry, and possession of various drugs and paraphernalia.
