TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Vigo County Sheriff's Office is coming together to help one of its own. This, after a correctional officer found out his infant daughter would have to have an open heart procedure.
A small rubber band wraps around the wrist of Curt Zehner, and it's for a reason.
“Kaylnn has a heart condition that's a congenital heart defect called trifeageelo," Curt Zehner said.
For the Vigo County Sheriff's Department he keeps inmates in check. For Kesley, he's a husband. And for Kaylynn - he's dad.
The Vigo County Correctional officer says his one-year-old daughter has a long road ahead.
“The only thing that needs to be done is open heart surgery, that's the only way to fix it,” Curt Zehner said.
To help, the Vigo County Sheriff's Office is stepping in.
“We are having a fund raiser this Saturday,” said Vigo County Chief Deputy, Clark Cottom.
Just two days after her birth, doctors diagnosed Kaylynn with a serious condition, a major issue with her heart.
"And a hole in the heart, thickening of the blood vessel that leads to the main lungs and it's something that needs to be fixed other wise it will come along with a lot more problems," Curt said.
A treatment that can only be delivered by specialists.
But for Curt, Kesley and Kaylynn - only words can describe how they feel about his employer stepping in.
"I can’t find the words really, it means the world to us that someone would and is willing to come together and do something like this and help somebody out," Curt said.
