TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Exchange Club of Terre Haute is recognizing outstanding service to its community.
On Tuesday, the organization handed out the firefighter of the year award.
Firefighter Jim Likens received the honor for his actions during the Garfield Towers fire in May of 2012.
The ceremony took place at the Holiday Inn in Terre Haute.
Officials say Likens is a hardworking and dedicated individual.
“Jim is modest. He doesn't think he deserves this award. But we definitely think he deserves this award. He set up the truck and single handedly brought down a patient that we all think would have perished if it wasn't for his actions,” Fire Chief Jeff Fisher said.
There was an estimated 1.3 million fires across the country in 2012.
