POLAND, Ind. (WTHI) - A Clay County, Indiana man who built his own boat has started his journey to the sea.
Back in 2010, News 10 told the story of Tom West, a former engineer at Indiana University, who was building his own sail boat in hopes of traveling the globe.
Since then, the big boat named "Faith" has taken shape on a tennis court in West's yard near State Road 42.
When asked where he and his wife plan to sail, West told News 10 "Wherever we want. It's just like a car, except it runs on the water. We can go where we want."
Tuesday and Wednesday, crews loaded the boat and equipment on a truck trailer. Over the next few days, the boat will travel to Cincinnati, then down river to the Gulf of Mexico, where it will undergo more work.
West said he particularly looks forward to seeing the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.
