BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - President Barack Obama has announced he plans to appoint Indiana University Professor Emeritus Bruce Cole to a commission that will oversee a memorial being built in honor of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The commission is in charge of completing a national memorial to honor the commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the nation's 34th president.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie praised Cole's selection and called him a distinguished scholar of Renaissance art. Cole is professor emeritus of art history and comparative literature. He also is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington.
Cole also served as chairman of the National Endowment of the Humanities from 2001 to 2009. He is the longest-serving chairman in endowment history.
