INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Chad Phelps, the youth pastor at Colonial Hills Baptist Church, was on a camping trip in Michigan with teenagers from the church. He was giving members updates on their long trip home. Chad tweeted the morning of the crash anticipating the bus' arrival.
"On the bus on the way home! Pray for safety. Check back here for time updates as they become available."
"We lost four dear friends from our church family and we're going to have a long road, but God's good," said Jeff Leffew, a Deacon with the church.
Chad, his wife Courtney Phelps, their unborn child and Colonial Hills Baptist Church member Tonya Weindorf, who accompanied her disabled son on the trip, were killed in the crash.
"Tonya wrote a special note to the camp director, he showed it to me yesterday. Just thanking him for the way that they served them all week long and how special they were to their son and how grateful she was for their outpouring to her family," says Leffew.
The three victims were all graduates of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina.
Chad Phelps just received his masters degree in ministry in May. His wife Courtney graduated in 2011 and school officials say the couple likely met at the school. They were returning home, soon to add the newest member to their young family.
Chad Phelps was back on Twitter, just after 2 p.m. He sent the following tweet:
"Just sent a OneCall out that we should be arriving by 4:15! Please pass this info along to anyone who could use it!"
Crews were dispatched to the scene of the crash at 4:15 p.m.
