PARIS, Ill. (WISH) - The same Paris, Ill. teen convicted of murdering his own mother is now being branded a good kid.
Terry Payton's early release from jail is headline grabbing in The Paris Beacon-News .
Local activist, Adonna Bennett, bought the young man the Hollister shirt he's wearing and the short-term freedom he's enjoying!
"Yes, we got him out, yesterday. He had some donations for the bond,” Bennett said. “We got him out, first thing he wanted to do was go to McDonald's and get a cheeseburger!"
But Payton's taste of freedom will be short lived.
The convicted killer, now 18-years-old, is set to go before another judge on Friday to determine whether the murderer of his own mother will be sentenced as an adult or as a juvenile, which Payton was when he stabbed Kathie Payton to death.
In March, Payton was convicted by a jury of Second Degree Murder -- a lesser charge than the state initially was going for.
"He loves his mother,” Bennett said. “He loves his mother very much!"
Bennett is among a growing group of Payton supporters, who insist the boy was raised by an abusive, alcoholic mother -- that his violent outburst that fateful day was in self defense, and that Payton is a victim.
"He's a great kid! I mean, you talk to any of his teachers -- my son-in-law had him for a student. And he never ever gave anybody any ounce of trouble!" Bennett explained.
Bennett will be in court Friday when Payton is and, if her plan prevails, she'll be there when he walks free for good!
Or at least gets a whole new trial.
