ILLINOIS (WTHI) - $1,000: that's the extra amount some Illinois students could have to pay in student loans.
That's if an agreement isn't reached on interest rates. Interest rates on student loans are expected to double July 1st.
They'll go from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.
This rate hike will affect more than 365,000 Illinois students with Stafford Loans. These students would likely have to pay almost $1,000 more over the life of their loans.
Legislators are currently working on a proposal to restructure these rates.
