WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Educational/Family Services, located at 3850 U.S. Highway 150 in West Terre Haute, provides basic education and GED instruction for adults and after-school tutoring for children.
Volunteers from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, where the tutoring sessions are taking place, and Indiana State are just some of the volunteer tutors going the extra mile to improve the lives of both adults and children, like aspiring train engineer and fire fighter Dustin Drisko.
"Mostly I'm trying to learn to do money. And trying to get my driver's license," said Drisko. "If I didn't have this program I probably wouldn't be around today."
The educational-friendly program, which is free of charge, has been in place for the past 17 years. Educational/Family Services Director Penny Sullivan said the program is very diverse.
"It's really for everyone. If you need a GED or a one-on-one," said Sullivan. "If you need reading skills or money or some other type of skill then we're able to do that as well."
In 2012 50 students received either after-school tutoring or assistance with adult education programs, including helping adults prepare to take the military's ASVAB program.
Sullivan said the program is not only important but crucial to have available for area residents.
'This program is vital to this particular area," Sullivan said. "We're the only free service out here in this area."
For those interested in supporting the educational-friendly, nonprofit program, Educational/Family Services is hosting a bowling fundraiser Sunday, June 23 at Terre Haute Bowling Center. The fundraiser is scheduled to take place from one p.m. to five p.m. Eastern time.
The cost of the bowling fundraiser is 15 dollars per participant and includes two games of bowling and shoe rental.
