TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Sheriff's deputies arrested a man and woman Tuesday on allegations the duo stole goods from a Terre Haute store and led officers on a dangerous chase.
An employee at the Terre Haute Kohl's store told authorities she saw Stephen Dowd and Ciara Ramsey steal shoes and clothing by hiding them on their persons and trying to sneak them out of the store. When the employee tried to stop Dowd in the parking lot, she said he shoved her into the side of his car. Both Dowd and Ramsey drove away.
The employee then called the Vigo County Sheriff's Office about the incident. A deputy began following Dowd and Ramsey. The deputy said he pulled the duo over, but when he got out of his car, he said the two sped away. The deputy reported watching the two disregard stoplights and almost crash into other cars.
The deputy then pulled the couple over again and ordered them to the ground. Dowd reportedly told officers that he was only stealing because he lost his job and needed money. They say he also said that he told Ramsey to drive off.
Ramsey faces charges of Theft, Resisting Law Enforcement and Reckless Driving. Dowd faces charges of Theft and Battery.
