PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Indiana State Police conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near mile marker 45 on Monday that resulted in an arrest for transporting and harboring illegal aliens.
The vehicle, a white 2001 Mazda van, was driven and owned by Luciano Cax Ortiz, age 24, of Phoenix.
Ortiz provided a Guatemala ID card and Guatemala passport, but no driver’s license.
Further check of the vehicle revealed six other occupants, three of the occupants, one female and two males had no identification and three other males had only Mexico credentials.
Officials believe the six passengers were in the United States illegally and en route to New York City.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was contacted and the six passengers and the vehicle were transported to a nearby truck stop and released from ISP custody.
Ortiz faces possible charges of transporting illegal aliens for gain, harboring illegal aliens for gain and operating without ever obtaining a liscence. He is being held at the Putnam County Jail.
