TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Thursday, November 15 is America Recycles Day!
TREES, Incorporated is holding a week-long collection of unwanted athletic shoes.
Each pair will be reused or recycled.
Newer shoes will be given to Catholic Charities or Goodwill Industries to be reused.
Worn out shoes will be sent to Nike for full recycling into indoor and outdoor playing surfaces like tennis courts, running tracks, football fields, or gymnasium floors. Some will also be sent to Goodwill for a group that accepts very worn shoes and distributes them to help victims in the aftermath of natural disasters.
People willing to contribute athletic shoes can drop them off at four different locations:
- The Vigo County Public Library lobby at Seventh and Poplar Streets
- Terre Haute Firehouse north at 13 th Street and Fort Harrison Road at the west end of Plaza North Shopping Center
- Terre Haute Firehouse south at East Margaret Avenue where it dead ends into Highway 63 South
- Terre Haute Firehouse east on Fruitridge Avenue just north of the gateway to Deming Park
UPDATE: Around 9 a.m. on Saturday, the Terre Haute Police Department responded to the Statesman Inn room 144 at 1407 N 3rd Street. Officers found Randall Norton Jr, 21, with multiple stab wounds to his back and abdomen.
The Washington Police Department responded Friday around 2 a.m. to a complaint of a male subject being shot. The incident happened on Oak Grove Road in Washington near Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Thursday night’s church fire in Prairie Creek in Vigo County was still smoldering Friday afternoon.
UPDATE: An assault on Friday around 2 p.m. leaves one man seriously injured. Terre Haute Police responded to the 2100 block of Locust Street in Terre Haute after a report of a battery.
The warmer weather is a thing of the past, and it's expected to get worse.
