TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A strange list of state rankings came out recently called the "United States of Shame Chart".
From the state with the ugliest residents to the anti-social state, several different research agencies composed the map that lists each state's worst statistic. Indiana is the "Least Green State".
Some Wabash Valley folks are shocked at that label.
"I was somewhat surprised. Because I feel like Indiana is doing more than their fair share of promoting sustainability and green living," Director, Custodial and Special Services Facilities Management at Indiana State University, Paul Reed said.
Meredith Osburn from Goodwill says she has mixed feelings about the ranking. She doesn't see many places that offer recycling, then, there is the other side.
"There are the people that are very passionate about being green. And have turned their facilities to green," Wabash Valley Goodwill Director of Retail Operations, Meredith Osburn said.
The number of people who recycle has grown tremendously over the past couple of years. Even at News 10, we encourage employees to separate plastics from paper.
Even if Indiana gets the "least green label" many people hope that changes.
"We are getting some new sortation devices so we can amp up our recycling program," Osburn said.
"A lot of our mission is not only to collect the material but also to educate individuals about the need," Reed said.
These advancements will help to make Indiana greener the next time those rankings come out.
Illinois was ranked with the "highest rate of robbery" having about 285 robberies for every 100,000 people.
Goodwill has been accepting old items since they opened in 1927, by accepting gently used clothing, household items and much more. They expanded their recycling to include paper, plastic, etc in March of 1995 by opening the drop-off center and adding machines to sort recyclable material.
They accepts hundreds of recycling contributions in a week's time, however they are not set up to capture a figure of how much they accept before it is sorted and distributed to the appropriate branches.
