INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Jeff Saturday retired on his own terms on Thursday – as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.
Saturday played last season as a member of the Green Bay Packers. On Thursday, Colts owner Jim Irsay signed a one-day contract as Saturday stood by smiling. He played for the Colts as center from 1999-2012 before playing one season with the Packers.
“This has not happened for many players, especially not many offensive linemen,” Saturday said of the one-day contract so he could retire as a Colts player. “I’m excited to retire as a Colt. This is my home. This is what we’ve supported for so many years.”
Irsay noted Saturday’s big role in both the franchise and the league. He helped settle the league’s lockout.
Former teammate Ryan Diem spoke to WISH-TV's Chris Widlic before the news conference, calling Saturday a leader.
“He didn’t have the C on his chest, but he certainly deserved it,” Diem said.
Saturday’s family was at the facility for the retirement. He plans to live in Indianapolis and work in community relations for the Colts.
