MOUNTAIN HOME, Texas (AP) - A Texas man who lives on a private wildlife preserve has shot and killed a black bear that wandered on to the land apparently seeking water.
J. Whittenburg V said Thursday it's "unbelievable how many varmints and critters are coming out of the woodwork" seeking food and water during the drought.
Whittenburg and his two dogs weren't hurt during Wednesday's encounter near Mountain Home, in Kerr County. Whittenburg said he felt threatened by the bear apparently heading for a pond.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said the 2-year-old bear, weighing 103 pounds, may have migrated about 150 miles from Mexico.
The black bear is an endangered species. Agency spokesman Mike Cox said game wardens who took custody of the animal are doing a routine investigation.
