Father and son scoop up treasure

Gold coin could be worth $100-$50,000

JUPITER, Fla. (CNN/WPTV) - A father and son have made a rare, valuable discovery off the coast of South Florida. The pair was diving in shallow waters off a Jupiter beach Sunday morning when they discovered a gold coin.

That coin, it turns out, is a 350-year-old Spanish coin that ended up at the bottom of the sea following a shipwreck.

After the finding, Scott Henley and his son had a difficult choice to make - take the coin and not tell anyone, or report the find to the treasure hunter who owns the rights to the area.

Henley decided to report the find, a choice that impressed the coin's legal owner, Dominic Addario.

"What makes this a treasure is the fact he recognized the historic importance of this, and stood up and instead of sticking it in his pocket or hiding it, he reported it to people that could help document it, prove its validity and give it historical significance," said Addario.

"This is a dream for me, personally, diving off of here for so many years to one day... happy to find a piece of history and happy to find a coin. You dream about finding a piece of coin and I was so happy and thrilled, I said, 'Well, one of my dreams has finally come true,' because I was able to find a coin on my own," said Scott Henley.

As a reward for Henley's honesty, Addario allowed him to keep the coin he found as a souvenir. The coin can be worth anywhere between $100 to $50,000.
