INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Two cases of West Nile Virus have been found in Hoosiers so far this summer: one in Hamilton County, the other in Marion County.
Experts say there are a few things folks can do to minimize their exposure to mosquitoes.
First, get rid of or stay away from stagnant, standing water, popular breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Also, if possible, wear long sleeve shirts and pants.
Lastly, apply mosquito repellant to exposed skin.
The Indiana State Health Commissioner, Dr. Gregory Larkin, said most people who are infected will be given a prescription for symptoms. The virus, he said, will run course and most people will recover.
“For many it's a mild disease, maybe headache, aches, pains, not feeling too well,” Dr. Larkin said. “And for a few that perhaps have a compromised health condition because of other health conditions, they can't fight diseases well, it can be quite a serious disease. In rare cases, it's been reported to be fatal.”
In 2011, nine human cases of West Nile Virus were reported in Indiana; one was fatal. Of 13 human cases reported in 2010, one was fatal.
In 2009, only four human cases were reported, but one was fatal.
The Health Department said folks over age 50 are at the greatest risk for serious illness.
Statewide, 72,000 mosquitoes in 89 counties have been tested this summer. West Nile Virus was found in mosquitoes in 53 of those counties.
