CORONADO, Calif. (CNN/KGTV) - A sea lion pup is recovering after being rescued along the Silver Strand beach in the San Diego area, and it turns out sea lion and seal rescues are up this year.
Upon arrival, the pup seem scared and dehydrated.
"It could have been trying just to get away from the water, get away from people and in turn finding itself in an inconvenient location," said Kourtney Sanders, with SeaWorld Animal Rescue.
SeaWorld brought the pup to their animal rescue and discovered he was sick and underweight.
"We went ahead and gave it some electrolytes, we gave him some sub-q fluids, help with the dehydration process," said Sanders.
It will take about two months to get the sea lion rehydrated, catching and eating it's own fish before it can be released back out in to the ocean.
Last year at this time SeaWorld rescued 25 pups. So far this year, 72 have already been rescued.
It's not clear what's causing the spike, but they are expecting to rescue nearly 200 this year.
"If an animal is sick, we try to always be there, but there are times that people call that the animal doesn't need to be picked up," said Sanders.
