AUSTIN (KXAN) - For many, Halloween is a time for festive parties, costumes and candies.

Others, however, believe it's a time when the veil to the spirit world is thinned and therefore allows the spirit world to be contacted easier.

And though the skeptics may simply brush off the subject altogether, Celebrity Psychic Belinda Bentley said there are precautions nonetheless to keep in mind for those thinking of dabbling into the unknown.

"It's like people who don't even believe in this stuff, they will literally make a party, have a Ouija board out and have tarot cards out," said Bentley. "It's definitely just important, just don't play around with the negative aspects of it."

The paranormal investigator from Sacramento, Calif. said the holiday itself brings out a certain spirit amongst everyone because it's gotten into such a collective consciousness.

"The biggest safety you can have is to go into it with an open mind," said Bentley. "Celebrating it and having a lot of fun with it is probably one of the best ways to protect yourself."

Having the ability since childhood, Bentley uses her intuition and natural psychic skills in her investigations - which come on a weekly basis. She said sometimes it even comes four or fives times in a day, taking on the most extreme.

What's extreme? Bentley said anything involving children, scared animals, poltergeist activity or abandoned locations where people need to work to make a living but are scared out of doing so.

"I'm scared of people. I'm not scared of spirits," said Bentley with a laughter. "I love it. I love what I do."

She's been in the business for a decade and works year-round, only taking off a week to attend the Burning Man Festival that takes place on a Native American reservation.

In a world where Bentley said people have had serious documented cases of problems after contact with "the other side," it's enough to cause some alarm to have at least some safety procedures in place.

From bringing in mediums to do a seance, to doing the Ouija board with friends, Bentley said there are ways to keep kids and adults safe during Halloween.

Staying safe this Halloween

The DON'Ts:

  • Don't invite anything into your body.
  • Don't investigate alone.
  • Don't conjure the devil for fun.
  • Don't do it if you're unusually afraid of these types of things. The fear can bring in something negative.
  • Don't drink and conjure. Alcohol can impair judgment and also draw something negative in.
  • Don't go to abandoned buildings without permission and background on they type of haunting.

If you are new at this, friendly hauntings are the best.

The DOs:

  • Do get help from a professional ghost hunter or psychic/medium that's credible.
  • Do have a lot of fun, and don't be too afraid. Spirits are around us all the time.
  • Do make your own talking board/ghost board with your own intention to bring friendly ghosts in.
  • Do ask that only positive residential spirits come into the area, so as not to draw in other spirits that may be darker.
  • Do read books and learn as much as you can before calling on the spirits.
  • Do celebrate the life of the dead. They are still living and among us. They love to be acknowledged.
  • Always send them home after you are done communicating. It's like hanging up a phone once you're done talking on it.
