AUSTIN (KXAN) - Central Texas dentists are giving the little ghosts this Halloween a chance to turn in their BOO-ble gum for some cold, hard green - and a little something that glows in the dark.
Trick-or-treaters can turn in their cauldrons of candy to Advanced Dental Care of Austin in exchange for $1 per pound and electric glowing toothbrushes.
"Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well," said Dr. Justin D'Abadie. "Plus, kids get to learn about giving back to U.S. Military personnel deployed in harm’s way.”
The Halloween candy will be shipped overseas to an Army National Reserve troop, usually stationed out of Fort Hood, which is currently deployed in Iraq.
The dentists are embracing the idea of “Putting your money where your mouth is” by leading their own anti-decay movement against what they call "cavity-provoking" candy.
Advanced Dental Care of Austin said global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2 percent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids' teeth are being cared for more than ever.
Candy, along with any donations, will be collected at the dentists' office at 6500 McNeil Drive in Austin from Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The candy must be unopened.
