TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With power outages around the Wabash Valley, many stores have sold out of portable gas-powered electric generators.
Experts worry some customers who are buying new generators do not know how to use them correctly.
“The generators need to be properly set up,” said Josh Sittler of the Honey Creek Fire Department. “Don’t try back-feeding by plugging the generator into an electrical outlet in the house.”
Sittler said many homeowners try running their generators inside porches or garages, something he said can fill homes with dangerous carbon monoxide gas.
“The (carbon monoxide) is going to build up in the structure,” Sittler said. “Initially it’s going to cause dizziness. The worst-case scenario is death.”
Sittler also recommends:
- Only powering a few appliances with one generator, not overloading it.
- Using heavy-duty extension cords suitable for appliances.
- Running generators away from doors and windows.
- Allowing generators to cool before refueling them.
- Reading user manuals for generators.
