Dave's 2012 - 2013 Winter Weather Forecast

This upcoming winter looks to offer something a little more “old-fashioned” in terms of winter weather. 

By “old-fashioned”, I mean frequent and measurable snowfalls, along with colder than average temperatures for the season.  Temperatures do look to warm up slightly through February but it looks to stay cold through December and January. 

A normal winter season will bring the Wabash Valley 18” of snow and this year the potential for higher amounts looks very likely.  I'm forecasting snowfall totals around 22” for the months of December, January, and February! 

While we will see some wintry mix events, the threat for major ice accumulations looks low for this upcoming winter season. 
 

Here are some more details on the months ahead. 

December will continue to stay on track with our current active weather pattern as several areas of low pressure systems and cold fronts pass through.  Temperatures will start off cold with a few areas of snow flurries during the first ten days. 

By the 13th and 14th our first major snowfall of the season looks to move through with 2" to 4" inches of snow.  Three more quick snowfalls look to follow on the 21st, 25th, and 31st all around the 1" mark possibly near the 2" mark.  Yes, I'm forecasting a white Christmas this year!

 
January continues to be active and also looks to be the month where we see the most snowfall.  Another 2" to 4" snowfall looks to fall within the first week of January before warmer temperatures briefly move in with a wintry mix around the 11th. 

The two biggest snowfalls of the season look to move in next and they will be back to back around the 15th and 20th of January.  Total snowfall from both events could reach 5" to 8"! 

The last ten days of the month look to stay quiet with a few unmeasurable snow flurries.  Temperatures for the month look to stay near to slightly below average.


February will still be cold but will see temperatures slightly above average with a less active snow pattern.  A brief wintry mix is expected the first week of the month with a light 1" snowfall around Valentine's Day. 

Cold rain showers will melt away any snow leftover on the ground around the 18th with another quick snow shower moving back in on the 21st.  Snowfall amounts of 1" to 2" are expected. 

The last week of February will hold one last brief wintry mix event before we move into March and get closer to spring!  
 

This is long range forecast for the next three months so I too will be tracking everything from temperatures to snowfall amounts as they happen in hopes of gaining more knowledge for my next winter outlook!
