How to make your own eclipse viewer

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - What you’ll need:

1. Empty paper towel cardboard tube.
2. Aluminum foil
3. Pen or pencil
4. Piece of white paper
5. 5 x 7 note card (optional)

Take the cardboard paper towel tube and wrap the foil over one end, covering the end with the foil.

Take your pen or pencil and poke a small hole in the middle of the foil. (about 1/8 inch is all you need)

Get the piece of white paper and hold it with one hand. In the other hand, point the end of the tube with the foil toward the Sun. DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN!

On the paper, you’ll see a shadow with the Sun shining through the small hole. The Sun is a small circle of light inside the shadow.

You will be able to watch the eclipse on the piece of paper! Watch as the Moon slowly advances over the disc of the Sun.

DELUXE VERSION:

Cut a small square or hole, bigger than the one in the foil, in the middle of the 5 x 7 note card.

Tape the 5 x 7 note card to the end of the tube with the hole and foil.

The 5 x 7 card will provide additional shadow and an even more clear view of the Sun on the white paper.
